2025 Call for Presentations

The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) is now accepting session and research presentation proposals for the NRHA Annual Rural Health Conference, which will be held May 20-23, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Any person with an interest in rural health is invited to submit session proposals or original research for presentation during the nation’s premier conference celebrating all things rural health.

Presentation submission information:

  • Submissions must meet all the requirements of the category
    • Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed
  • Submissions must be received no later than Aug. 15, 2024
  • Only electronic abstracts will be accepted
  • Notification of acceptance will be sent out in late October
  • Presentations may not market products or services
    • Exhibit space is available for that purpose
  • If accepted, presenters must register for the conference
    • As a small gesture of appreciation for the work in preparing a presentation, NRHA will offer a limited-time discount on registration fees
    • If you register and pay in full by the early-bird deadline, you will receive a 50% discount on your registration fee
    • All registrations received after this deadline will be charged the full registration rate
  • No honoraria or travel expense reimbursement will be provided for any presenter submitting through “Call for Presentations”
  • If accepted, speakers agree to present in person
  • Standard audio/visual equipment provided by NRHA includes:
    • LCD projectors
    • Screens
    • Podium microphones
    • Computers must be provided by the speaker
  • Sessions are 75 minutes in length

Criminals are getting smarter every day and using advanced technology, such as Artificial Intelligence to scam the elderly. Loneliness also creates situations for vulnerable adults leading to romance scams.

The federal government, states, commonwealths, territories and the District of Columbia all have laws designed to protect older adults from elder abuse and guide the practice of adult protective services agencies, law enforcement agencies, and others. Basic definitions associated with elder abuse are provided as well as a link to the DOJ State Elder Abuse Statutes.

This new article also reviews government agency oversight and the Transnational Elder Fraud Strike Force, various forms of scams and how to report financial fraud other elderly to the Elder Fraud Hotline and the FBI.

Duty of care is a requirement that a person act toward others and the public with the watchfulness, attention, caution and prudence that a reasonable person in the circumstances would use.

If a person’s actions do not meet this standard of care, then the acts are considered negligent and any damages resulting may be claimed in a lawsuit for negligence.

New Resources for Occupational Licensure Compacts

The licensure process is intended to protect the general public and to ensure patient safety. Health professionals must meet the licensure requirements of the state where they are located and be licensed or legally permitted to practice in the state where the patient is located.

To practice in a state, providers must meet the requirements. Requirements include education exams and background checks. Health care providers are expected to maintain and renew their license. Maintenance may require an annual fee, continuing education and self-reporting disciplinary actions.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) supported Multi-Discipline Licensure Resource Project aims to improve licensure portability for health care professionals working between states and for people who are geographically isolated.

The site now includes compact information for professions such as:

  • Dieticians
  • Physician Assistants

Requirements for Buprenorphine Prescribing

Requirements for Buprenorphine Prescribing

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced in January 2023 that clinicians no longer need a federal waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for treatment of opioid use disorder.

Clinicians are still required to register with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to prescribe controlled medications.

In June 2023 the DEA began to require that registration applicants – both new and renewing – affirm they have completed a new, one-time, eight-hour training.

Exceptions for the new training requirement are:

  • Practitioners who are board certified in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry
  • Graduates from a medical, dental, physician assistant or advanced practice nursing school in the U.S. within five years of June 27, 2023

Please note Rural Health Clinics (RHCs) still have the opportunity to apply for a $3,000 payment on behalf of each provider who trained between January 1, 2019 and December 29, 2022.

Approximately $889,000 in program funding remains available for RHCs and will be paid on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted.
